Day 2 – Roncesvalles to Zubiri

So after conquering arguably the toughest stage of the Camino yesterday, this shorter walk, with mainly descent, into Zubiri should be a breeze?

Oh no no. Firstly, we now had our full backpacks to carry. With each pack weighing in at over 10kg it was going to be a bit different. But we’d trained carrying that amount a few times so all should be okay? In reality, it was ok; but seeing so many other people carrying much smaller packs it’s clear that we’ve got far too much clobber. One Canadian woman even asked if we were camping!!

The weather was perfect again – nice and cool as we left at 8am but the temperature rose throughout the journey. But nothing too hot – just right really.

We covered the first 9 miles quickly and easily, but like yesterday, the end of the walk was mainly downhill. The last 2 miles were bloody horrible – not as steep as yesterday, but the terrain was so rocky. Luckily our poles helped massively. If it were wet, part of it would be downright dangerous.

Anyway, we’re here in Zubiri – aching a lot more than yesterday; another 15 miles tomorrow to Pamplona, and then a day of rest.

Lots of pilgrims early on

Anyone for a game of Pelotte?

  1. Loving this and sat on the sofa in anticipation of the next installment. I don't have the urge to walk it myself but I think that apart from the huge challenge, it's really romantic that you and Cate are doing this epic walk together. Kim.
